HBIC Volume 2: Yoga in Heels

We're Getting Physical with Yoga in Heels

When Donna Burke steps out in style it's often in something that she just stepped out of the gym in - but you'd never know. As the founder of YogainHeels.com, a fashion blog dedicated to keeping you cute while wearing your workout garb in or out of the gym, Donna shows readers how to keep the black yoga pant versatile and glamorous - just ignore the sweat.

How did you get started being so awesome with Yoga in Heels?

HBIC, Donna Burke
It was a fluke, I swear!  In 2011, I started posting “Fashion Friday” posts on Atlanta Yoga Scene to promote my sister’s store, Atlanta Activewear, to the local yogis.  All of a sudden, the editor of the site told me they were the most popular pages so I started my own blog, YogainHeels.com.  It blew up overnight. I’m still shocked and sometimes still think only my granny reads it….until someone mentions how funny they think my wardrobe malfunctions are.

Why Yoga in Heels?

I do it because I love writing it.  Yoga in Heels combines everything that I love: fitness, fashion, styling, social media, and writing.  Give me an excuse to wear stretchy leggings and rhinestoned heels so I can write funny stories about them and I’m there.

How do you stay inspired?

I randomly get ideas all the time and have lists upon lists everywhere I turn.  I keep a book in my handbag and have notes on my iPhone. I jot ideas down everywhere I go.  A lot of the time I get ideas from street style or people in the gym and want to turn their outfits into something bigger, better, and more functional.  I’m inspired by my own “Bridget Jones Moments”; moments that were supposed to go fantastically right but ended up going unbelievably awry.

What advice do you have for people who want to get into the blogging?

It’s not all sequins, high heels and runway shows.  If you want to be a blogger find a niche that you love, make it authentic, don’t sell yourself short, and be ready to become addicted to your iPhone. Blogging is a major time commitment;  a single blog can take over 6 hours to create between styling the look, hair, makeup, photo shoots, photo editing, writing, linking, promoting via social media, etc.  It’s hard to fit in, especially when you have a full time job and work on the weekends.  Also, be ready for criticism.  Not everyone will love you and that’s a hard pill to swallow.

You're on a desert island - what 3 things are you bringing?

iPhone...I should just have it surgically implanted. Sunscreen because I’m the palest person you know. David Beckham because you didn’t tell me I couldn’t.

What are your top Atlanta finds and favorite places?

Your only stop for fitness fashion is Atlanta Activewear.  Noche Tapas and Tequila bar for good food, fun and $5 margaritas.  Vanquish Lounge for a night of dancing!

What’s next for Yoga in Heels?

Leopard harem pants, need we say more?
I’m hosting a Vintage Glamour party at Whiskey Park at W Midtown on December 8th with My Style Vita and The Fashion Lush.   It’s going to be quite the bash!

Give us some words of wisdom:

Never leave the house in sweats.  A woman must be prepared to meet a dashing stranger or an old enemy.

What’s the craziest thing that happened to you since you started Yoga in Heels?

Someone came into Atlanta Activewear while I was working, stopped dead in their tracks and yelled “OH MY GOD! YOU’RE YOGA IN HEELS!” I had no idea who they were, so it was my first celeb moment.

We love you, do you love us?

Duh. You share in my love for ROGIANI leggings, Raw Bronzing spray tans and margaritas!
