Meet Hillery - BOFC's Event Intern

We're so thrilled to introduce the newest addition to the BOFC team - Hillery Sawyer! Hillery will be diving right in to her internship by lending her creative expertise to client events. Learn a little more about this very talented lady below. Welcome to the team!
Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Well hello there everybody, Im Hillery and Im pretty happy to be here. I am a Georgia native who loves to travel, get crafty, and take pictures. I spent some time living and schooling in Canada where I married my high school sweetheart and now I am back in Georgia studying at a community college as a non-traditional, which I absolutely love.

Whats your favorite part about being back down south?

Oh man, being back in Georgia has been great. I love school, I have loved reconnecting and getting to spend more time with my girl friends from high school, and of course I love the weather! I do alright with winter and love it most of the time, but there really is nothing like southern weather!

So, you are going to be our new event intern. What made you want to apply?

I have always loved gatherings and I am a big supporter of community. To me, gathering together really is the backbone of friendship and society and a great way to learn about others and ourselves. A very wise matriarch in my family once said to me, as we get older, we realize that even the little things in life are worth celebrating, and without gathering together and enjoying each other there really is no point to it. That really stuck to me and Ive used it as my motto ever since. Its really brought me to appreciate the times I get to share with others.

Where would you most love to travel?

Well, I am actually really excited because I get the opportunity to travel to Europe for the first time ever this summer for a short study abroad. Europe has been on my bucket list for a long time, but Id also really like to go east. I would love to travel to India, Tibet, China, Japan, and someday down to Australia and New Zealand. Id also like to spend some time exploring South America and doing some hiking there. Truthfully, I want to go everywhere and could never choose a most loved place to go.

What new craft would you like to learn?

I love working with my hands and have always wanted to mess around with carpentry. I love furniture and design and I think it would be so satisfying to design and build something as simple as a chair. Something functional, but to have the opportunity to really put some love into it so that every time I sit downI cant help, but think about the process.

What's your favorite animal?

I have always been intrigued by anteaters. I knowthats pretty strange. I think they are cute and I love the weirdness, yet practicality of their physical build. I nerd out sometimes on the idea that they evolved into the perfect creature to do what they do and that they must love the taste of ants a whole lot, which is a rather weird and particular thing for your body to evolve to be good at.

Tell us something unique about yourself.

I am left handed and I love it. I love left handed products, and am constantly inspired by famous left-handers, even if that is a little biased.

Where do you hope joining the Birds will lead you?

Like the anteater, I am looking for a place to evolve. A place to really immerse myself into a community where I get to be apart of events that really celebrate what live is all about, being human. I think as humans we become better at humanity by being together and learning from each other. I also absolutely love the BOF missionhow they are so good to their clients and also so good to others. It really hits me that they truly support women inbusiness and women of the world. And I love it more that their entire hearts are totally in all they do.

HBIC Volume 5: Lace Larrabee

As we were planning Backbone Fest this past year, we were searching for the very best lady talent around. The comedy stylings of mega HBIC were recommended to us and boom - we had to have Lace Larrabee as a part of the event. Once she hit the stage, it was as if this kindred spirit was speaking our language. We love a funny lady and this woman is smart and kind to boot.

Get to know Lace a little better and find out where she'll be performing next:

How did you get started being so awesome as a comedian?
I'm so flattered, thank you for the compliment! I have to credit my family with my sense of humor and my unnecessarily high level of confidence. Making fun of each other was how we showed love and built tough skin at same time.

Why comedy?
I have been a fan of anything comedy related for as long as I can remember. I knew I loved to make people laugh and I love to perform! When I got too old to compete in pageants or be a cheerleader anymore, I had to find another way to get in front of an audience. Stand-up comedy, as crazy as it sounds, was just a natural transition for me.

How do you stay inspired?

Life is funny and that's pretty much all the inspiration I need. I'm inspired by ridiculous jobs I've had, relationships, family, getting older, really everything. I've realized that as soon as you replace anger with gratitude, it's easier to kick back and see the humor in everything around you.

What advice do you have women in your industry?

Well, the women who are already in the industry blow me away with their innovation and talent on a daily basis. I constantly learn from them. However, If I were talking to a woman wanting to get into comedy, I would just encourage her to follow her dreams, as cliche as that sounds. Push forward and stick to what you think is funny despite the negativity you might receive from the fun-haters out there. Also, it's not even worth it to engage people who don't believe women can be funny. It's such an absurd and antiquated subject that's only ever brought up by men who don't have the guts to get up and take chances themselves.

Desert island - what 3 things are you bringing?
Sunscreen, a knife, and a yacht.

Top Atlanta finds/favorite places?
Piedmont Park is my favorite place in Atlanta. It's a great place to people watch, exercise and day drink all at the same time.

Also, I love hoarding antiques and Paris on Ponce is the best place to browse for hours imagining what my house would look like filled with awesome things I can't afford.

Where can we catch you performing next?
2/26 The Jungle Room
2/27 The Punchline
3/1 Jerry Farber's Side Door

I'll post my other upcoming dates on! Please come out to support local comedy!

Give us some words of wisdom:
Don't sweat the petty stuff and don't pet the sweaty stuff.

What’s the craziest thing that happened to you while performing?
A guy hit on me from the audience in the middle of my set after his girlfriend got up to go to the bathroom. I can't believe I didn't take this knight in shining armor up on his irresistible offer. Man, I really missed out.

We love you, do you love us?
Of course! How could I not?! Thank you again for the opportunity to perform at The Backbone Fest! It is still the highlight of my stand-up career!

January Fix

It's cold out. Like, pack my bags and move to Austin cold. So, while I make idle threats, here's some things that are keeping me happy in rainy, weird January Atlanta weather.

1. Magical Looseleaf Chai Tea from Teavana.

Best Chai I've ever had. Smells incredible. Cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla, ginger magical goodness. Get it here.

Oprah approved. Need I say more?

2. Cold weather skin saver. Dr. Hauschka's Rose Day Cream. All natural, holistic skin care - this brand is incredible. And smells awesome too. Get it at The Aviary in the Old Fourth Ward.

Face magic.

3. Thrifting for the perfect vintage trophy/vase. I've been on the hunt for a while but haven't found the perfect one just yet. Next stop: Scott Antique Market.

4. Desktop wallpaper by Britt Bass. Love this artist -- check out her work on Etsy here ....and download the free wallpaper here. Work happy.

I mean...

5. This song. By The Mynabirds. Total Backbone Fest Babes.
